Defeating the Banger Clinic

Strategies for Defusing Aggressive Players

Are you tired of opponents who just hit hard? This clinic is for you. We will teach you the essential strategies and techniques needed to neutralize an aggressive player—a skill that will give you a significant advantage in any match.

We’ll focus on mastering the three key shots that will defuse a hard hitter:

  • The Block: A controlled, compact shot designed to absorb the pace of a hard-hit ball.
  • The Reset: A soft shot that neutralizes the rally, forcing the banger to start over.
  • The Counterattack: A controlled, offensive response that turns your opponent’s aggression against them.

We teach you how to use the following skills to determine which of the shots is appropriate in the moment.

Response to the Hard Shot Once you’ve reacted, you need to know where and how to place the ball. We’ll show you how to execute a successful block or reset and where to strategically place the ball to take advantage of your opponent’s positioning.

Anticipation: Situational Awareness The first step is to always be prepared. Learn to read your opponent’s paddle and body language to anticipate a hard shot. The key is to expect every ball to come to you fast and be ready to react.

Readiness: Be Prepared Success begins with your ready position. We will teach you a foundational stance that prepares you for anything, with your paddle held up and positioned above the net.

Reaction: Strategic Response When a hard shot comes, your reaction is everything. We will train you to “do less” with your body. By keeping your lower body stable and your upper body strong, you’ll be able to execute short, compact swings that control the ball’s pace. No big swings, just controlled power.

Reading the Ball Your response depends on recognizing specific cues in the rally. We will teach you how to look for opportunities to counter a banger, such as:

  • A dead dink
  • A high-bouncing ball
  • A third shot drive
  • A big, over-committed swing from your opponent
  • A stall shot
